Entre 2004 e 2008, ele disputou 190 jogos oficiais pelo Internacional e marcou 77 gols; em 2004 ficou marcado ao marcar o gol 1.000 dos Gre-Nais. Na Libertadores de 2006, foi capitão, marcou um gol e deu uma assistência na final contra o São Paulo, sendo eleito o melhor em campo. No Mundial de Clubes da FIFA de 2006, o Inter derrotou o Barcelona, com Fernandão mantendo a liderança do time; Gabiru fez o gol da confirmação do título. Em 14 de junho de 2008, transferiu-se para o Al-Gharafa; depois, atuou como diretor executivo e, em 2012, como treinador do Inter, até ser demitido em novembro daquele ano.
